LAS VEGAS-Consumer Electronics Show-January 5, 2000-The home of the future is here today…and it doesn't look like George Jetson's house. Sage System's "Un-Jetson" home bucks the public perception of a "smart" networked home and introduces an energy efficient environment that can be controlled via the Internet without special wiring, without a home server, or any other expensive or complex technology.
The first "Un-Jetson" home was opened today at The Willows housing development in San Jose, CA by Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation (NYSE: KBH), the leading provider of quality entry-level homes in the United States. It will be offered to K&B homebuyers nationwide starting in Feb. 2001 and will be previewed at CES in Las Vegas by narrowband home networking leader, Sage Systems.
Sage will be featuring Internet connectivity to the "Un-Jetson" Kaufman and Broad home at CES North Hall booth 4160. The San Jose home will be open to the press by appointment starting Jan. 10. This partnership between Kaufman and Broad and Sage Systems marks the first major release of Internet-accessible, affordable home networking technology in everyday homes.
"It's been our experience that, when given the option, up to 80 percent of our California homeowners choose to wire their homes for the future," said Glen Barnard, president of e.K.B Inc., Kaufman and Broad's e-commerce subsidiary. "We're confident that the addition of the Aladn-enabled products to our wired home options for new Kaufman and Broad homeowners will translate to high adoption for Aladn, while providing an affordable and energy efficient way to control and monitor their new home."
Sage Systems, creator of Aladn(tm), an affordable technology for networking everyday devices, offers homeowners "intelligent" thermostats, dimming light switches, electrical outlets, personal computer links and secure remote Internet access. Using Aladn, the "Un-Jetson" home connects major appliances, consumer electronics and everyday electrical devices via existing electrical wiring allowing homeowners to control these devices via the Internet through an Aladn Internet gateway and Kaufman and Broad's website. Aladn products and network access will be available through selected Kaufman and Broad New Home Showrooms starting in February. The cost of an Aladn system can be as little as $1,000 and may be easily financed through a new homeowner's mortgage. New homeowners will have a personal Internet "window" into their home through the Kaufman and Broad website by simply logging onto www.KBHomes.com. Aladn provides the ability to make the home more comfortable, add convenience and security and save money on energy costs.
"After listening to what homeowners really want and expect from home technology, we've determined that the concept of a 'smart' home is often intimidating. Homeowners want a home that is smart enough to do what it's told and one that's available today, not five years from now," said Steve Raschke, founder and CEO of Sage Systems. "Sage's Aladn offers a simple and low-cost way for homeowners to use the Internet to better manage their home environments-today."
